Espanol no mas

One last little town before the final stretch to the border. We've loved so much of the trip and the places and the people and the culture and the language, but yeah, I'm really done trying to understand Spanish. Last night we went a little out of our way to find a hotel with a TV with cable so we could watch the Oscars. Most years, I watch 'em if they're on, but I certainly don't go out of my way. But at this point, just about anything familiar is especially nice.

Both channels broadcasting the Oscars were doing simultaneous translation in Spanish. Our Spanish is almost good enough we could probably have understood it if it wasn't playing concurrently with the English. But the Spanish was just loud enough we couldn't really hear the English. So we have no idea what anyone said, except maybe the first three words of each speech before the translaters kicked in. So we know everyone's acceptance speech started with "I'd like to thank ..."

Even the movie clips were either translated, or the translaters just offered color commentary about the actors over the clip. It was a little like being at an Oscar party with really annoying party guests who talk loudly over everything saying things you really couldn't give a shit about. Ah well, if I remember past award shows, we probably didn't miss much great wisdom. And we got to see the pretty dresses. Anyway, three hours of this was enough to put us completely over the top on our quota of Spanish.
